Planning: Moodboard

The first moddboard was our first idea on where we would film for the music video, however from our audience feedback of our group pitch and talkign to memebers of the band we decided to change it and film in a local park which is shown in our second mood board, this was because it was more ocnvienient for the band members and it's what they preferred instead of Central London.

Audience feedback on Animatic

'I liked the animatic as it gave me an idea of what to expect the actual music video will look like. I feel that actually seeing the still storyboard put in with the music and seeing where there would be cuts made it seem a lot more real and i felt i would be able to imagine it a lot better than just looking at a story board set out on a table.' - Alex, 15 from London

'The animatic has made it a lot easy for me to have an idea of what the video is going to look like, when you were explaining it to me i had images but i couldn't piece everything together so being able to watch something with visuals and the track playing in the back is much more helpful and easier to understand, i also feel now the ideas have come together and the music video will be successful' - Mary, 17 from London

'The animatic looks very good and i feel that when i was watching it i was entertained throughout and did not get board.' - Tom, 17 from London

Planning: Updated Storyboard and Animatic for 'London Love'

As  a group we decided that our previous storyboard didn't have enough detail in it such as what camera shots and angles we were going to use, so we went back to the beginning and decided to add in more images that showed the exact way we would be filming so that when going out to film we are able to follow our storyboard step by step. We created a new storyboard and animatic so that when we go out to film everything is clear and in place.

I feel that having an animatic is very important not really for an audience but for us as producers. Ot not only brings our ideas together but it also gives us a plan which we can work off of. It is very clear and precise and shows us exactly what bits we need to film and what shots and angles to use. I feel that the animatic will allow for us to be able to go out and film and not hesitate that we do not know what we are doing as we have a plan that shows us exactly what we need to be doing. The animatic will also come in handy when it comes to the post production stages as we can also look back to see where we want our cuts to be and in what order we want to place our footage. Doing this stage in the pre production stages is just putting us at an advantage as we now have extra planning that will help us throughout all the stages of production.

Planning: Audience Profile

Target Audience:

The typical audience member that would list to Maliki are teenagers/students, both male and female, of the ages between 15 and 22.
I looked at the bands Instagram page to view their followers, and saw that teenagers and people of the bands own ages follow them and this will be the same target audience for our music video.

The genre of are band are indie/pop/rock, and produce music which sounds like it would be performed at festivals and gigs, and not heard as much on mainstream radio.
Target audience is important as we want the audience to reflect the genre of the song and vice versa.

Research: Audience Interview

From our audience research on their on idea of the music video, we found that a lot  of them thought the lead singer should be in it more walking around during the day as well as there being slow motion effects on footage to keep with the pace of the song, therefore we applied all of this to our music video as we thought it would work really well.

some audience members thought of having a black and white effect on the whole video, however we did not want it in black and white as we thought of showing the natural colours of the park around us as it fits with the winter scenery due to the slow pace of the song. Most audience memebers agreed to our first idea of having footage of couples kissing which fits with the song and the pace, however we ended up changing this and having a narrative instead.

Overall from the audience interview we gathered a lot of information, to which some we eventually applied to our music video and some we subverted. having this information helped shape our final product as it allowed us to see what the audience of our target audience actually wanted to see.

Research: Song Lyric Analysis

Our group spoke to Laura who is the singer for the band Maliki, and we found out exactly what the lyrics mean to her. The overall analysis is that she sings about how she doesn't know weather or not the love she is receiving from that person is real.

Planning: Group Pitch

Once we gathered the audience feedback from people who are of the same age as our target audience for our music video, we took in all their feedback and changed round what our initial idea was. Their main feeback was having a performance shot somewhere in the music video,we took this information and applied it to our music video. The audience also said how the song was too long, and that we should cut a certain part of the song, which we did to make it shorter as it would be much easier so we wouldnt need to add in so much footage.

however some ideas we discussed to the audience and the feedback we recieved all changed because we discussed having a performance shot of the members of the band in the school studio, however we decided tha we would film the performance shot of the band in their own studio making the scene look more professional to show where the band do their recordings, this creates a good atmopshere.

we also decided not to film in central london, such as getting shots where the london eye is this was because it was more convienent to the band to meet them somewhere local rather than travelling to central to film, as it can get very busy and hard to film so therefore we decided to film in a local park instead

our intial idea we gave to the audience wa to film during the night to mke the atmopshere more intense to link tot he ong however, some audience memebers disscussed that filming at night can be ver tricky as we woud need several lighting in order to make the footage look professional enough, and also carrying all of the equipment around central London would be very difficult therefore we decided to change location as well as change filming to day time.

Audience Surveys

As shown from above i took a survey on 20 people ranging from the ages 15-26 which fits our target audience very well, we found out that majority of people enjoy listing to indie music for various reasons such as it's relaxing and it can either be upbeat or slow pace which can fit any mood you have as well as th elyrics feels liek they actually speak to youand can be relatable in some sorts, therefore frm this we decided to choose our genre to be Indie as majority of those surveyed chose indie than any other music genre.

Planning: 3 Point Lighting/Experiments

3 Point Lighting

As a group we decided to learn about and experiment with 3 point lighting in order to know how to correctly light our frames when it comes to shooting our music video.

Key Light: This is the main light. It is usually the strongest and has the most influence on the look of the scene. It is placed to one side of the camera/subject so that this side is well lit and the other side has some shadow.

Fill Light: This is the secondary light and is placed on the opposite side of the key light. It is used to fill the shadows created by the key light. The fill will usually be softer and less bright that the key. To achieve this, you could move the light further away. You might also want to set the fill light to more of a flood than the key.

Back Light: The back light is placed behind the subject and lights it from the rear. Rather than providing direct lighting (like the key and fill), it purpose is o provide definition and subtle highlights around the subjects outlines. This helps separate the subject from the background and provide a three-dimensional look.

Some of the filters we used were:
Soft filter
Light orange filter
Strong orange filter
Red fiter
Purple filter
Translucent filter
Light green filter
Dark blur filter
We also used the LED lights to add some backing lighting, to create more shape of the person in front of the camera.

Planning: Rule of Thirds

                                      The Rule of Thirds

For this part of our planning, we decided to go out and take pictures that conform and deliberately break the rule of thirds, so that when it came to filming we would have a better understanding when framing our shots. The rule of thirds is applied by aligning an image or subject within the intersections of the 9 square imaginary grid. Having the image correctly within the intersections frames the subject completely.

If  a grid was placed over this image, we would be able to see the intersection fit onto the boys eye, and cut across his forehead, with his face within a square, completely framing the image and conforming to the rule of thirds.

Same goes for this image, the boy with the camera is within the right hand side of the intersection and in the foreground of the image, whilst the other boy is in the left intersection and in the background of the image.

This image breaks the rule of thirds as the boy is not correctly within the intersections of the image, however the image still is successful as it conforms to the subject of portraiture, and includes examples of good composition, framing and shadows.

Research: Links to similar artists/bands (felicity)

These are some bands within the indie/pop genre whom I think relate and are similar to our band Maliki. Some similarities are that there is usual a lead vocalist, who receives more attention from camera, press and audience than the other members of the band. For example, Matt Healy from The 1975 is the main singer and is the most recognisable from his band, the same as Laura is going to be the main focus within our music video, as well as our print products.

Another similarity is that all the bands above as well as Maliki have produced a variety of songs that still fit within the indie/pop genre, such as fast upbeat songs like "Girls" by The 1975, and "Mr Brightside" by The Killers. This variety keeps audiences entertained as there is a mixture of different sounds which still fit the genre the audience is most interested in. I feel our band Maliki fit the forms and conventions of and indie/pop band, and also relate to the target audience through their own ages and the lyrics within their songs which feature teenage issues/subjects such as adolescence, drugs, alcohol, love and so on.

Research: Links to similar artists/bands

Some of the bands/artists I feel are similar to my band Maliki are:

The above artists and bands i have chosen all are similar to my band in the sense that they all create music of the same genre. I also found that like Maliki all the above artists and bands have a mixture of slow and fast songs, some which have music videos with narratives and some which are music videos of just performance shots. I feel that another similarity is that all the above are quirky and free not only in their music but in their appearance and this too is the case with my band. I feel that my chosen band conform to the forms and conventions of the indie/pop genre and because of this i am able to identify several similarities between them and other artists and bands. I also feel that in my band each person has found their place in the band and are comfortable, so each person know what they are best at doing and all have a different role to play within the band.

Research: unsigned artists/band research

Band Name: Maliki
Band Memebers: Laura, Filip, Tom and Ronnie
Band Genre: Indie pop
Chosen Song: London Love
Location: Ealing: United Kingdom

This is a small band known by friends and a few followers on social media. They create music which conforms to the indie pop genre. Each person plays a different role in the band, we have the main singer who is Laura, Filip the keyboardist, Thomas the drummer and Ronnie the base player. The band is different in style and take many different approaches for each song the produce; some being slow and meaingful to a certain person and others being much more upbeat and relatable to the whole band and their audiences. The band produce all their music in the Thomas' backyard where he and the rest of the band have set up their own little studio where they are able to record all their own songs and where they can all get together to have jam sessions. In addition, although the band are not well known they still perform little gigs where there friends can all come together to show their band support, i myself went to watch one of their gigs held in Richmonds basement door. This band is different and unique in style and are always keeping it fresh nd coming up with lots of new amazing songs.

Research: Unsigned Band (felicity)

                                                  BAND NAME: Maliki

BAND MEMBERS: Laura, Phil, Ronnie, Tom.

                                              BAND GENRE: Indie/Pop

                                          CHOSEN SONG: London Love

                                   LOCATION: Ealing, United Kingdom

                                               LEAD VOCALS: Laura

                                                          KEYS: Phil

                                                       DRUMS: Tom

                                                       BASS: Ronnie

Maliki is based in Ealing and we found this band through mutual friends. We attended one of their gigs in Richmond where they performed a various amount of songs, and thought they would be perfect for our production. Each member has their own role within the band; Laura is the lead vocalist, Phil plays the keyboard, Tom is on drums and Ronnie plays bass. The band produce all their songs in Tom's small studio next to his house, and produced a variety of different sounds within their genre. For example some of their songs are fast tempo with dance vibes and positive messages, whereas some of their other songs are much slower, and contain deep meanings within the lyrics. This variety is what attracted me to their band as all their music is different, as well as staying within their indie/pop genre.

Research: Genre

  • In the 1970s, an underground urban movement known as 'Hip-Hop' or 'Rap' began to develop in the South Bronx in New York City.
  • The popularity of rap music was most influential to black teenagers and then began to entertain a wider audience.

Dr. Dre was one of the first Hip-Hop/Rap artists to have been successful in the music industry. Dr. Dre found fame with the influential gangsta rap group called N.W.A with other famous rap artists such as Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella, which popularized the use of explicit lyrics in rap to detail the violence of street life.

Conventions of Hip-Hop/Rap genre:
  1. Dressed either smart e.g suits or casual/cool
  2. Direct contact with the camera - makes the audience feel as if the artists are talking to them
  3. Props such as heavy, big jewellery are normally worn by male artists in order to show the wealth they carry with them.
  4. Artists have the most latest cars
  5. male artists are also likely to have girls around presented as sex symbols.
  6. female artist such as Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are likely to be presented very voyeuristically
Examples of Conventions

  • This music video clearly shows the artists wealth by presenting the car that Dr. Dre is driving, as it shows the spinning wheels are gold.
  • Snoop Dog wears a chain again showing that e has money and also showing he's superior.
  • In the music video you can see two girls at the back on the car, presented voyeuristically to the audience
  • we can also see throughout the music video there is eye contact with the camera, allowing the artist to communicate with the audience directly.

From this image here we can see that the artist Nelly is presented in front of a car with a Gucci hat as well as a chain, rings, a watch and silver teeth, this straight away shows that he has money and this conforms to the hip-hop/rap genre in every way.

The artists clothes also conform to the genre as back in the day, hip-hop/rap artists were normally wearing baggy tops in music videos.

Target Audience

  • Hip-Hop/Rap artists tend to target at people their age as well as young teenagers aged 16+, therefore their target audience varies as there are may artists that are much older such as Eminem who is currently 42 years old therefore, some artists target audiences can be as high as 50 years old.
  • However Kanye West target audience, for example is mainly ages 15-25 due to the style of music he raps about.
Examples of Hip-Hop Artists
